This kind of absolution of 'ordinary folk' from any guilt (for the horrors perpetrated in the name of their leaders) is a near universal human moral cowardice in the re-telling of wars. History always tends to overemphasise the importance of Hitlers, Stalins, Maos etc because - dark as those stories are - the truth is darker still. These powerful demon leaders would be nothing without the millions of favour-seeking, grudge-bearing 'ordinary folk' seduced by their snake oil.

Where are the media reports of people in Gaza who want to be rid of Hamas, I never heard or saw those, the only thing reported is Gazans complaining how terrible Israel is being because it is defending itself by getting rid of Hamas. Obviously Hamas has great support from the "ordinary civilians" of Gaza and so they must be similarly treated as combatants. There is no getting around the reality that it takes a lot of collaborators to keep these murderous regimes going.

No, they could hide identities of people who say they want to be rid of Hamas etc., but the fact of the matter is they support Hamas with fervour as I have seen in every interview/report.

My husband was stationed in Germany in the late 60s. Our landlords were in the German army during World War II. They proudly showed us pictures of themselves in their uniforms. It was one very weird experience although they were nice to us while we were there. What makes people think Palestinians aren’t proud of Hamas?

Just the Palestinians? Did you see of all places, Montreal the same night, the absolute joy, it was sickening.Followed by NYC and Sydney and Elsewhere.

The absolutely sickening example of Jew Hatred! Antisemitism is too nice of a world.

Israel has every right to defend itself and take actions to prevent any more attacks. They also have the moral right to exact justice.

The criminals and their Depraved evil leaders must be eliminated.

Isreal, a çivilzed democracy must also display and set as an example of how a civilized decent and righteous people exect justice. By using their superior armed forces they must be seen as doing their upmost to spare civilians. Repeating the merciless and cruel bombing of German civilians during WW11 does not advance a civilization. And continues the cycle of hatred and violence, not to mention helping Hamas recruit new terrorists.

You know Alan, as a fellow Islander I've always been proud that you made your stand on the porch of the Chilmark Store. For some reason, I always believed that there was an outsized importance to your ongoing symposium. Now I know that there is. You hit the ball out of the park on this one.

This is a very well laid out article with truth. Thank you. I have been following that region since I was 17 and I know that each group that comes in to govern whether it was Arafat or the PLO or the PPA , all of them , have used the (Palestinian) people as political pawns and not only brainwashing them but used their sacred lives. The UN, the entire globe it seems has been privy to this....It does not take a genius to look at the maps of the region over the years to see that Israel has not gained what is being shouted out.....It does not take a genius to know that the airspace above Gaza needs to be protected in order to protect Israel.....I would like to ask you one question Professor if you read these. The PR coming out of Gaza by whichever organization is ruling and the PR from other Arab countries (all lies) has been the same for decades ,not over a century, so why has not the PR for the Jews countered this in a way that could have at least back in the 60s-90s changed what we know of the region? When I would talk to other Jews about terrorism and hate crimes in other areas of the world all over the world, which was never reported by MSM ) they would just say that it has always been that way. Well why did we not have a Martin Luther King bringing us together to educate others? Jews went down to Alabama and marched so that Black Americans could enter college. Jews marched with MLK and probably were his biggest advocate while Bobby Kennedy tapped the phones of MLK. I think the Jews hold some responsibility in not changing the world view of themselves. But as a whole population Jews are not violent and are very opened minded about other races and cultures...Happy Thanksgiving...

Re. "I think the Jews hold some responsibility in not changing the world view of themselves." As mentioned, there is a terrible contingent of self-hating Jews who are not unified in defeating antisemitism and anti-Israel hatred, but rather want to kill themselves and other Jews so they openly support those who hate the Jews - this is exploited and antisemitism gets a crutch to continue since with friends like these self-hating Jews who needs enemies. This has been the case since biblical times - unfortunately while an insignificant population in the world, the Jews cannot maintain a unified stance the way blacks and other minorities do to act from a place of strength and as such Jews are always compromising and tolerating or rationalizing hate that no other group would. It stinks and makes me feel very vulnerable because I do not get support from other Jews and my view is not common. You can see for example in the way Dershowitz expresses himself, he always hedges what he says with some compromising element to appease and he does not want to criticize his antisemitic Democratic party directly - by taking this tact or remaining silent, he and other Jews with their platforms dither and continue to allow ongoing problems with antisemitism. That is not to say that antisemitism is only the Jewish people's problem to solve, the world also has the obligation to recognize that antisemitism is a form of hatred and discrimination that is unlawful and cannot be excused just like any other form of bigotry.

‘Day 46’ of ‘The Daily Briefing’ podcast, produced by The Times of Israel, addresses this very issue.

Haviv Rettig Gur suggests that part of the reason is to do with the realisation that nothing the Jews say can convince the anti-Semite. Explaining has never made any difference for the Jews. They have always been pronounced guilty. Always blamed.

Therefore, the Jews must just take action to protect themselves and their nation. The truth will out itself later.

It’s worth listening to. (Especially as my reporting of what was discussed is more of an interpretation of what I understood them to be saying.)

Very valid points…even their brother Arabs in oil-rich states really do not want Palestinian workers due to their potential extremism, instead preferring to import millions of non-Arabs from other places like Pakistan and India. With all that oil money and empty space, the Palestinian “refugee” problem could have been solved years ago by their Arab bothers….pro Hamas supporters should think for themselves, instead of being brainwashed by propaganda.

I remember not sharing my German heritage in my elementary school years. Having learned of the Shoah, I was truly ashamed, even though my ancestors immigrated to America in the 1850’s. Good thing I was also Welsh and Scottish, so I had an answer.

Agree wholehearted with this Article

My wifes family of German/ Polish/ Romanian heritage ( circa 1850 to 1945) immigrated to Canada in the late 1950's

On my late mother in laws living room mantle was a photo of her grandfather all his relatives, Brothers, Sisters , Aunts , Uncles, and cousins.

Remember this is Romania, not Germany.

My wife could point out in the Photo Those opposed to Hitler and who were Partisans? Who saved her Grandfather. And those who were Nazi's Pro Hitler.

And her Grandfathers Cousin who according to my wife, she was a Nazi,as Nazi as a Nazi sympathizer could be, through and through. Would have sold out her cousin without blinking an eye.

One really sad part of this horrible truth was my wife's Grandfather refused to believe that almost all of his Jewish friends, aquantinces, were murdered.

That was until the day that my motherinlaw, was doing a clients hair hair in her beauty salon. Small talk leads to where are you from ? I know that accent, Oh im from Romania, really So Am I! What city? No not a city, a village, the client said to her. What ?my motherinlaw asked?

My motherinlaw almost fainted, called my wife's grandfather, come papa come I have someone from our village in Romania. When the client told him her name , he said i Remember you when you were born! How is your family, how is so and so , how is.....

He then learned the terrible truth!

Now for any American reading this, never again ask how the German People let this happen, how could they not have known.

You have a Former President Twice Convicted , Once for Rape , now a second time for Fraud, On Trial for Insurrection, and Theft of State Secrets in the Documents Trial.

And you have judges too scared to enforce the 14th amendment barring him from office. Cowardice Equals Complicity.

Members of his party unequivocally supporting him

Cowardice Equals Complicity

Media Outlets giving unabashed support.

Cowardice Equals Complicity.

So now i ask you, what will be your excuse? In this day and age? Can you say you didn't know? Can you say i didnt really think that would happen? I didnt think it would come to this?

Think again
