Let's say Israel succeeds in killing the bulk of Hamas and all their domestic leadership. What then? Their financial leadership is based in Qatar. The ideology of Hamas ("destroy the Jews") enjoys broad support throughout Gaza. That can be changed, but after Hamas is dead, it requires a commitment by Israel to reconstruction. Abraham Lincoln's 2nd inaugural address comes to mind, but in the context of 2 groups that have never been "1 people", I'm not sure it works. Is Israel really willing to spend the next 20 years building schools and hospitals in a part of their land where the vast majority of people hate them? Should they?
Americans (and the WEIRD in general) have a hard time with national-level "kill or be killed" scenarios. It's too far outside our collective memory. What if that's the case here though? You are 100% correct. The military use of hospitals, medical facilities, schools and mosques, is an international war crime. Yet no news source proclaims this issue and ignores all Hamas war crimes.
What if this were reversed and it was Israel who did the horrific attack on October 7th and then was using its hospitals the way Hamas is? What would world reaction be? I suspect it would be totally different and the Hamas would be considered "justified" to attack the hospitals.
