This "DEAL" is going to facilitate more torture, rape and death in the future. Directly or indirectly, it won't matter. The insanity will continue because Hamas and Hezbollah were allowed to continue to exist.

Wow, writing about expectations of rape and torture when the cult leader himself was intimately connected to Jeffrey Epstein and has been accused of multiple and serial rapes and interstate trafficking of underage Gentile (coincidentally?) children! One of his accusers was even paid a million dollars to shut up. BTW some of those children died according to the author of the Miami Herald 3-part expose of Dershowitz but the coverup has kept information from coming out about when. You make the "DEAL" seem like the blueprint for the Epstein pedophilia operation! Well, Dershowitz may be with his ballast of alleged pedophilic sex activities, the best target audience for your comment.

I don't know what you think Jeffrey Epstein has to do with the rape, torture and murder of innocent Jewish civilians, right down to the youngest of children, by Islamic terrorists. I'll tell you one thing is certain Mohammed was a pedophile, so don't talk to me about other people's sins in defense of Islamic terrorists. If you're trying to imply that any one else involved in this thread is a pedophile, that's for them to worry about.

And while we're at it. Let me remind you that anyone else's sins, mine, yours, Mr. Detshowitz's, whatever they may be, DO NOT IN ANY WAY provide a defense for or absolve Hamas or Hezbollah

This thread, and my comment are about making deals with terrorists. If you want to talk about pedophiles, find another thread. Stop trolling and go take a nap. I'm done with you.

Dershowitz cult follower derangement syndrome. American law did not prohibit Muhammad from engaging in pedophilia 1700 years ago. Mohammad therefore did not break well settled American law. We need an indictment of Dershowitz to show he did. The allegations make him look positively evil. So lets find out if the criminal court agrees. Kurt seems to argue that Dersh is like Mohammad. Hear that, Mr Netanyahu. And your last paragraph...I bet you have a very overinflated idea of how important your syndrome affected personality is.

Jewish morality staved victory.

Jewish morality puts IDF soldiers at risk when Gazan civilians take precedence.

Jewish morality inspired the moral conscience of the West, who still hates the Jews for it.

As soon as 33 are freed, Jewish morality will clamor for the rest to be freed. And this nightmare of impossible deals will continue.

Even as Jewish morality requires that we deal fiercely with our enemies, for which our many enemies build blood-libels of genocide against us, saving one Jewish soul still takes preponderance, and Israel itself will not allow the war to be concluded.

And for all our Jewish morality, wickedness will continue to win.

Hamas is still there.

The ICJ is coincidentally investigating what Gisele is so very certain about. And the ICC has issued arrest warrants for two leaders. Gisele mischaracterizes the issue at hand by casting it as an investigation of "Jewish morality". My understanding is that Jewish morality is no different than the similarly Abrahamic morality of Christians or Muslims. The issue is whether certain soldiers and leaders acting on behalf of Israel and unrestrained by that government acted in such a way that they violated The Convention on International Humanitarian Law ratified by Israel in 1948 and the Genocide Convention for which Israel has been held accountable under in a separate case from 2015. Wickedness wins in the absence of a trial determining the truth of the serious allegations.

Have you seen an entire country unite demanding the release of a few prisoners, each citizen feeling as if each and every sequestered person is their child or parent, and that " choosing life", as Jews are commanded, overcomes victory, prioritizing it over the country's national security? I don't expect you to understand what I wrote. Your ignorance of Abrahamic religions is just one of the many reasons.Your blindness to who the villains are is hopeless.Starting a war is a terribly serious crime.Consequences are due,and Hamas still doesn't think enough Gazan civilians have died. Sinwar was recorded saying 100,000 would be good. You have the nerve to preach morals? You don't know right from wrong as long as you can cobble any dubious worthless thread to blame the Jews- what else does a Jew-hater do?- and Israel. Genocide in 2015?How? Isn't Hamas and the entire Islamic idea genocidal? The UN hasn't even condemned Hamas yet. The UN and its corrupt kangaroo courts are a cesspool whose strident immorality encouraged Hamas to commit its atrocities and to keep planning them, as they will. You don't know what genocide is. Educate yourself.

A teenager here gives a possibly self-authored declamation on morality and legality despite hardly having read anything of either. Lets pat you on the head, and say "Nice work. You have a great future" But watch out if Dershowitz tries to pat you. And maybe when you curl up and read books of diverse viewpoints for a few years, you will naturally look in embarassment at what you have written. -but now it is not bad for a typical teenager sheltered generally from the realities of the world and particularly the reality of Mr Dershowitz. .. After having reported at least six of your comments to Substack and arranged for their deletion because of hate speech, I do congratulate you for this time writing a 200 word essay without single epithet or other hate word. This shows maturity for you. But your essay lacks factual and logical argument and therefore is not persuasive to any other than hard core Zionists. And they needed no convincing from you anyway, so why write if your effort will be so unpersuasive. Grading on the curve, this essay rates a "C". If you start to support of your viewpoints with facts and logic rather than ad hominum language,. you go easily up to "B" or even "A" .

The elephant that Alan fails to mention is the 2.5M Palestinians who live in Gaza. Most of them likely support Hamas ideologically, but they didn't torture or murder or rape anyone. Alan uses the metaphor of a mugger demanding "your money of your life". A violent response of self defense is entirely appropriate in that case; pull out your Glock and shot the bastard without a second though. But you can't pull out a machine gun spray bullets randomly in that direction. That's not an acceptable response because it results in too much collateral damage, injury and death to innocent people. You can't even do it if you're in gangland and you're pretty sure everyone nearby probably supports the mugger. Still not OK.

Long term, the solution is 1-state -- Israel pushed everyone in Gaza out and claims the territory for the Jews. I don't know how they will do that, and it's clear they can't do it without independence from America. But coexistence is impossible.

So make the deal. Submit to the extortion. And once you have your hostages back, the first time Hamas fires rockets into Israel, declare the truce over, reinvade, and finish the job. We all know Hamas isn't going to honor a cease fire.

57 Islamic States and 22 Arab states are enough.

The only thriving state is Israel and it has a democracy.

Expand full comment

Its been done before, Brian. "They said" the same about Blacks and Whites in America, about Protestants and Catholics in Ireland, about Muslims in India. Chinese in Indonesia. . . One state may be viable, provided that the Knesset is forced by American leverage to enact the American 1964 Civil Rights Law, substantially repeated in Northern Ireland. Given the lack of prevailing empathy for other ethnic groups, the USA will have to use leverage to win civil rights for non-Jews.

The difference in each of those cases was that both sides reached the point that they were willing to accept the existence of the other one. The Palestinians in general (and Hamas specifically) are not there, and show no evidence they even way to get there.

Self-defense applies to nations as well. Sometimes, 2 people groups really can't coexist.

Expand full comment

Exactly true! Like in a marriage, you cannot “COexist” if one or both parties does not honestly want to. If your national charter is dedicated to the destruction of your ‘significant other’, you’re well in the realms of unwillingness or ‘irreconcilable differences’.

Maybe if they were paid for the land that the Zionists expropriated and if non-Jewish exiles were allowed to return to their homes, the Palestinians might in general get "there", as you write.

And if the Jews were reimbursed for what the Ottoman empire stole from them for centuries, that would be nice too. Neither is going to happen. Come to think of it, maybe the Italians should pay for Rome sacking the Jerusalem too.

People get conquered. It sucks for them, but it's happened thousands of times in human history. The Palestinians are no different.

Brian, lets try to stay withi a time frame of one human lifetime rather than going back 800 years or to the murder of Neanderthals by the Cro-Magnons. The problem was theft in 1948. if Israeli Jews want peace, they can pay for the goddamned land they stole. With all the Jewish megabillionaires who associated with and funded Jeffrey Epstein and Dershowitz, , fundraising should be simple and the result of payment would be for once just.,

OK. Should the Treaty of Trianon also be annulled that stripped Hungary of 2/3rds of its territory? The Hungarians think so. And that's just one example that pops to mind; there are hundreds.

This is international relations, not a schoolyard playground.

More fundamentally, if you think the problem is that the "Jews didn't pay for the land", you deeply misunderstand the conflict. It's a religious conflict, not an economic one.

Great piece! Terrible peace!

This "deal" will simply cement the currency of hostages in conflict. As a super-moral country Israel is in an asymmetric position trying to "negotiate" with terrorists, where lying is baked into their religion.

Do you really think that Hamas won't try to renegotiate for more and more prisoners with each successive phase of this cease-fire?

One need only look at the leadership of Hamas touting this as a complete victory and reaffirming its goa to murder all Jewsl.

A very sad day.

Make the Deal. Release the hostages and bring them home. Then release the so many thousands of terrorist into GAZA, where they can be eliminated quickly. End of problem, win-win.

The reality is that Islam cannot co-exist with civilisation, but western so-called civilisation has suicidal tendencies and has been beguiled into believing that their enemies are just misunderstood ‘friends’. When in doubt, just look at Sweden.

I agree, Professor, it is Hamas’ fault. And the fault of the moral idiots in the West who support or empower them. But it’s also the fault of a weak West that includes Israel, which caves to the sentimentality and short-sighted compassion, rather than doing the gut-wrenching and mature thing: to play the long game and have compassion for the nation and the civilization. If the West insists on this sentimentality and weakness, we cannot win. The worst people in the world will have us all permanently in their power. Hard choices must be made for victory over this great evil to be won.

This "deal" does not make sense. My heart has been pulled from my body all year following all the twists and turns and drama of this war and Israel's situation. When it started I sent money to my synagogue who sent a catalog, which contained things the soldiers might need -- I sent jackets, an air mattress, etc. along with notes. Yes, of course, one wants the hostages back, but what about all the brave soldiers of the IDF who have been killed in this war, for what? Hamas strengthened by thousands of murderers in Israeli jails? Gaza leveled but not destroyed? Yes, the right strategy would have been to secure the hostages and then go to war. But for all his faults and aggravations, I think Netanyahu did all he could to get a positive outcome for Israel -- until he was "forced" by "the savior" Trump to do this absolutely stupid agreement. I wonder what he threatened Bibi with? Biden wasn't a gem, but he would never play the villan like this. I just hope the hostages come back and then Israel totally wipes out Hamas and the terrorist mobs that are being released today.

Completely lost by this. This horrible outcome is the result of Trump extorting Israel. Not Hamas (or the trade would not be happening right before the inauguration as Trump demanded) or the "Democrat" Party as you call it. Didn't realize until now what a Trump ass licker you were. What an embarrassment to our (meaning Jewish) people!

Shame on both Trump for pushing Netanyahu & Netanyahu not pointing out that this is not the hill that Trump should be taking a stand on nor is it worthy of supporting by him. Yet two things being true at once October 7th occurred because Israel wasn't guarding itself optimally.

This is not only bad for Israel but all Jews and all people on the planet. This gives any group license to engage in this extrajudicial behaviour for whatever extortion purpose - there is no rule of law based on this deal and both international or domestic law have de facto been delgitimized - so we can now all do whatever harm we wish as we please - there is no legal accountability.
