Democracy-the people rule, much superior to leadership selection. Yet our Republic is democratic as proved by the text of our Constitution. “We the People...establish this Constitution” Much of this document we established affirms how we choose our leaders, and how our government shall be constituted. But the document does not end without iterating the people’s rights against their government, starting with Congress shall make no law..., and the right to petition our government for redress of grievances.
We are not a democracy. Neither are we a republic without consideration of the rule of the people nor choosing of leadership. Democracy is never on the ballot, nor our Republic. The ballot is solely for the selection of leaders by THE PEOPLE.
One wonders whether it will take a gulag, and a packed court full of radicals, for you to switch parties. At that point, unfortunetly, you'll be much too late.
"...the Supreme Court is supposed to decide issues based on enduring nonpartisan principles that are rooted in the language and meaning of the Constitution." ...100% correct. Unfortunately, so-called "progressives" feel that the Constitution can be ignored to suit their particular ideology.
"This may be understandable but it is inconsistent with the role of judges. "
Unfortunately this is the split in Israel too, with people on the right seeing inequality before the law and unequal treatment of different groups. I wonder if the current protestors would be fighting for "reasonableness" if the Supreme Court included a number of Dayanim?
“It may be wishful thinking to believe we could ever return to those days...”
Yes, unfortunately, it is wishful thinking.
It would help if you also discuss the importance of stare decisis in general, but also specifically in reversing Roe. In my view, that reversal “killed” any hope of a return to “normalcy.”

And yet, Alan, you still vote for Biden.
